In a recent Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued by Ram, it has been acknowledged that some Ram TRX models may experience a clunking sound in the driveshaft. The source of the noise appears to be related to the two-piece driveshaft's slip joint, which can occur during acceleration or deceleration.

To address this problem, the TSB recommends the following steps:

Inspection and lubrication: Technicians should inspect the driveshaft slip joint for any signs of excessive wear or damage. If no significant issues are detected, the technician can apply a specific type of lubricant recommended by the TSB to the slip joint, which may help reduce the clunking sound.

Boot replacement: The TSB advises technicians to remove the driveshaft boot, grease the internal spline cavity of the driveshaft about 1" deep, replace the boot, and secure it with hardware. Part number 68597433AA includes the necessary grease, boot, and hardware for this service.

Driveshaft replacement: In some cases, if the inspection uncovers excessive wear or damage to the driveshaft slip joint, the TSB recommends replacing the entire driveshaft assembly with the latest revision (part number 53011135AF).

As a Ram TRX performance shop, we have carried out both boot and driveshaft replacements, but the issue tends to recur over time. Currently, there is no permanent solution; however, based on the data collected, it's only a matter of time before the aftermarket industry devises a more effective fix. Keep in mind that these tips might work for some but not for others, and they are the only known solutions at this time.

If you believe your Ram TRX is affected by the driveshaft clunk issue detailed in the TSB, it's essential to seek help from an authorized Ram dealership or a qualified shop. These professionals will have access to the relevant TSB and the necessary equipment and expertise to inspect, diagnose, and repair the problem as needed.
