Cooling Power Unleashed: The Interchiller's Role in the Ram TRX and High-Horsepower Performance

Unleashing the Power of the Interchiller in the Ram TRX

The Ram TRX is more than just a truck; it's a symbol of power, performance, and engineering excellence. One key component that enables the TRX's astonishing capabilities is the interchiller. But what exactly is an interchiller, and how does it work in the Ram TRX? Let's dive in.

The Basics: Understanding the Interchiller Function

Supercharger Compression: The TRX's supercharger compresses the intake air, heating it up.

Interchiller Function: The hot, compressed air is directed through the interchiller, where it's cooled by a refrigerant.

Heat Exchange with Refrigerant: The interchiller's refrigerant absorbs the heat from the compressed air, cooling it down.

Cooling the Refrigerant: The heated refrigerant is cycled through a cooling process, allowing it to be reused.

Cooled Air to the Engine: The cooled and denser air exits the interchiller and is sent to the engine, where it's mixed with fuel and ignited.

Improved Performance: By cooling the compressed air before it enters the engine, the interchiller helps the Ram TRX's supercharged engine generate more power and run more efficiently.

These functions form the foundation of the interchiller's performance in the Ram TRX, contributing to the truck's incredible power and exhilarating driving experience.

Going Beyond: Interchillers in Modded Trucks and High Horsepower Applications
But the story doesn't end here. The interchiller's applications stretch into realms that thrill the hearts of automotive enthusiasts: modified trucks and high-horsepower beasts pushing into the 900–1000+ horsepower range. When horsepower soars to these levels, more heat is generated. Standard cooling of the incoming charge air simply isn't enough. This is where the innovative use of external reservoirs comes into play. By adding a reservoir with a 2+ gallon capacity (usually filled with coolant or a special mix), there's more volume at our disposal. The interchiller cools the fluid in this expansion tank, allowing for more volume to be utilized. This translates into the capacity to support 1-2 passes in a 1/4 mile race or a longer wide-open throttle pull without waiting for blower temperatures to cool. It's a game-changer, turning the interchiller from a cooling tool into a true performance enabler.

Conclusion: The Interchiller – More Than Meets the Eye
The interchiller is more than just a part under the hood; it's an integral piece of the high-performance puzzle. From the robust Ram TRX to the roaring world of modded trucks and extreme horsepower ranges, the interchiller stands as a testament to innovation and performance engineering. In embracing and enhancing the cooling capabilities, the interchiller system becomes a beacon for those who push their machines to the limit and beyond. It's not just about cooling; it's about unlocking potential and unleashing power.

Big thanks to Kirk from FI Chillers for coming to our shop and really digging into the nitty-gritty of chiller operation and proper use! Even though the article is straightforward and takes care to respect each manufacturer's intellectual property, it also includes a few sneak peeks from the training. Plus, it's comprised of data and lessons learned over the 60-70 interchiller setups we've installed up until the time this article was published.
